January 20 - the heroic chronicle of our people on the way to independence
Notwithstanding that 29 years have passed, the grief of the bloody tragedy of January 20 is still fresh. The massacre committed in Baku and other regions of Azerbaijan on January 20 were planned actions to stop the struggle of the Azerbaijani people for independence. On the night of January 19 to January 20, 1990, the Soviet Army entered the streets of Baku and opened fire on an unarmed civilian population fighting for independence. As a result of the attack of the tanks, 137 people were killed, including women and children, and 744 were seriously injured. The Bloody January 20 was the end of the reign of the Soviet Union in Azerbaijan. The country regained its independence on October 18, 1991. The sons of the motherland, who died on that terrible night, wrote a brilliant page in the history of Azerbaijan, and led to national freedom and independence of the people. Today, the bloody tragedy of January 20 is inscribed in the history of the independent state of Azerbaijan as a page of honor and heroism of our people.
